What You Can Expect From Tom Thibodeau, The New Knicks Head Coach

The wait has finally come to an end. The Knicks have announced the newest head coach and he goes by the name of Tom Thibodeau. What can we expect from him?

It seems like ESPN’s Senior NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski had this saved in his drafts and prepared to launch another “Woj Bomb” as they call it on the socials.

It’s been a week since the Knicks formally introduced Thibodeau. It felt right to put this piece out today as opposed to last week, given how many Knicks articles were produced.

Before we dive into this latest contract for New York, it’s ironic to see how divided Knicks fans are on social media. If you do a quick search, you’ll see how fans are either excited or annoyed. Ultimately, you’re never going to make fans happy.

Thibodeau is no stranger to professional basketball and has been around the league for as long as some of us have been alive. One reaction we’ve seen is, “Prayers up for RJ Barrett’s knees,” as he’s known to expect a lot of his players, which isn’t a bad thing. In addition, he’s going to be taking on a lot because of the group of players he’s being handed. They obviously don’t have enough experience but on the other hand – he’s known for player development. With him guiding these young players, he’ll bring some stability to the team. How can you be guided when the head coach is constantly changing? It’s not possible.

One thing that’s always been a concern is how the Knicks don’t seem to play any defense in the second half, which is why their record for the past few years is something not worth looking up. The defense seems to take a back seat and they don’t close it out. Thibodeau’s knowledge with defense is something I’m looking forward to because it’s one thing the team desperately needs. He’s experienced and has been regarded for his defensive plays.

He’s ready to go to work:

“This a dream come true for me,” Thibodeau said. “This is my dream job.”

My one concern is the whole 5-year part of the contract — will he actually last all 5 years? Also, will his teachings translate well to this young guys? We’ll have to wait and see once we return to some normalcy.
