Here Are The Contenders For The Potential Knicks’ Head Coach Job

Despite there being no NBA action, there’s always plenty of Knicks news to go around. Former Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson is expected to be interviewed for the Knicks head coach position.

Before we dive into who will be awarded the prestigious award of becoming the Knicks head coach, it’s pretty clear that current interim head coach Mike Miller will not be returning.

There are a few options of who the next head coach could be. It could be Kenny Atkinson or Tom Thibodeau. Mark Jackson won’t get an opportunity to interview, based on his past. Get over it.

Let’s dive into Tom Thibodeau. If you take a look at his numbers on Basketball Reference’s website, the man has been in the NBA for 30 years now. Although he was fired from the Timberwolves back in January of 2019, he’s accomplished a lot in his time as an assistant. He won a title with the Celtics as an assistant coach. He was the Knicks assistant coach when they went to the finals back in 1999. Also, he guided the Timberwolves to their first playoff appearance in 14 years. He has a solid winning track record. In addition, his time with the Bulls was successful. In other words, he’s very experienced. Will the Knicks go with a candidate who has delivered before?

The next option could be Kenny Atkinson. As SNY’s reporter Ian Begley shared, he’s also expected to interview for the Knicks coaching job. As some pointed out, he has a lot of strengths in developing players and demonstrated that as he coached that Nets team. He recently stepped down as their head coach and perhaps he might be interested in staying in the city, just a new zip code. With all the young talent the Knicks have, Atkinson might be the guy who can lead them. The 2018-2019 season delivered some success for the Nets as they got a taste of the playoffs. Will his minor accomplishments with the Nets make him standout?

Despite those two potential coaches, Mike Miller should still be considered and if not, keep him as an assistant coach. Miller’s work with the G League alone should make him stand out.

And then, another contender surfaces:

The Knicks certainly have their hands full. We have no choice but to wait and see what decision will be made.
